24 LOS ANGELES COUNTY OFFICE OF THE ASSESSOR When Disaster Strikes We are Here to Help All too often flooding, wildfires, earthquakes, and other natural disasters strike Los Angeles County. When this occurs, property owners can receive help from the Assessor through a temporary reduction in the taxable values of properties that are damaged. Taxpayers may also receive assistance through a tax payment deferment. During the 2017-18 year, a total of 112 properties damaged by natural disasters received disaster relief in the form of assessment reductions totaling $19,273,294. Damage to property must be at least $10,000 in current market value, and property owners have up to one year from the date of the disaster to file.
